If you’d like to make sure your websites pages are able to be easily and completely indexed by the search engines than you’ll want to have a site map created. A site map allows the search engine spiders to quickly browse beyond the home page and past the most popular pages on your site to web pages that are linked deeper on your site.
In the past html site maps were used for all websites. Now the most popular search engine sitemaps are the Google site map and XML site map. The Google site map is specifically for Google only and will not be understood by the other search engines. Using an XML site map will give you the greatest reach because XML site maps can be read by MSN, Yahoo, Aol and Google.
Google site maps have been the most popular in the past, however they are now being replaced by XML sitemaps which are the new standard.
